First-Generation Students

Who is considered a first-generation student?

At Missouri State, we define a first-generation student as a student where neither parent received a 4-year degree.

What is significant about first-generation students compared to other students?

Numerous studies have shown that many first-generation students do not have the academic, financial, and family support and have a lower retention and/or graduation rate than their peers who are not first-generation.

What resources are available to first-generation students?

There is not a specific first-generation office, so support is provided by a variety of different offices. The University maintains a first-generation student support website that breaks down available help by a variety of categories, include academic help, financial help, and family experience.
